Victorian and Edwardian photographers in York…part 3

Since posting about these family photos, I have now done some more research, using the book Dating by Design 1840-1915 by Stephen Gill.  My 3x great aunt, Ann Neale (born York 1845) married James Giles and later George Wardle (I say married but I can’t find any records). One of James and Ann’s children, Mary married William Myton and had a daughter called Kate Madeline, known as Kitty. Her husband Ernest Drysdale had a great aunt, Mary Elizabeth, married Cecil Cuthbert in 1894. According to the 1902 York trade directory, Cecil Cuthbert was part of Cuthbert Bros, the photography business. Some of the photos my uncle gave me were taken at Cuthbert Bros. I now know that business was at 19-20 Davygate from at least 1871 to 1881. Cecil’s son Robert Henry then took the business to Hanging Bridge Chambers, Manchester from 1891 to 1903.
Based on the lady’s sleeves and hair and the picture is a vignette, I think this photo was taken about 1889.
Based on his matching waistcoat, trousers and coat, the picture is a vignette, the style of the writing I think this is about 1892.
J Catley was at 11 Shipton Street. Based on the colour of the mount, pink, I had thought this was taken in the 1870s. I now know I was wrong, based on the address of Shipton Street. I walked down the road until I got to the school and saw a plaque showing it was built in 1890. On the 1891 census house, there was only one house, for the caretaker of the school. So, the photo couldn’t have been taken before this. Based on the man’s tie and his matching waistcoat, jacket and trousers and her sleeves I think it was taken about 1892. Some of the old pictures came from Kitty Hume’s family. As there were Catleys in her family, I wonder if this shows her relatives. Possibilities: John Catley (aged 55) and his wife Annie (nee Hill, aged 53) when their daughter Amelia married in 1898; John Hume (aged 54) and his wife Elizabeth (nee Crow, aged 53) on the occasion of the wedding of their son, John Henry to Maria Longfield in 1897; or James Hume (aged 56) and wife Maria (nee Mawson, aged 51) when their son James married Hannah Elizabeth Smith in 1895.
Based on her high collared dress and the cabinet card with rounded edges I think this was taken about 1876.
Since posting these before, I now know that Henry Masser (born 1838) was living at 38 Bilton St, York with John Hume and Hannah nee Moon (the census says his uncle and aunt, but I haven’t proven this yet). I haven’t found his on the censuses for 1871 – 91 but by 1901 he’s at 10 Tower Street where he remains until his death in 1935. His son, Francis Henry, had taken over the business by 1938. I think this photo is around 1890. Possibilities: Mary Smith married Carbutt Harrison in 1890; Thomas Benson married Jane Peacock in 1891; John William Thirsk marriage in 1891 to Lydia Hume; Hannah Elizabeth Smith married James Hume in 1894; James Hume married Hannah Elizabeth Smith in 1895; John Henry Hume  married Maria Longfield in 1897; Ada Matthews married William Streeton in 1898; Joseph Streeton married Annie Cleminson in 1898.
