Local radio

I was lucky enough to have two of my local history pieces played on BBC Radio York, during Harry Whittaker’s Uploads shows. The first, in February 2020, was about my Saturday job in Boots The Chemist in the 1980s. The second was about an ancestor of mine, Mick Metcalfe who was a rag and bone man in the Layerthorpe area of York.

You can listen to them here and here.

I’ve also recorded a piece about a lost village near York and the shopping arcades in York when I was a child.

My Saturday job in Boots allowed me to buy clothes and records. My favourite second-hand record shop at the time was Cassidy’s at the Lord Mayor Walk end of Gillygate. I paid £3 for Elvis Costello’s Punch the Clock and £2.50 for Get Happy!! Other records which I bought new included Tin Drum by Japan; the picture disc of Kayleigh by Marillion; The Word Girl by Scritti Politti; Happy Birthday by Altered Images; and of course Thriller.
