Rev Walter Sackett

This George Thwaites’ postcard is of the Reverend W Sackett. The postcard was with some family photos given to me by my uncle in the 1980’s.

Walter Sackett was a Wesleyan Methodist minister. He had been born in Barham, Kent and died in London but on the 1901 census he was living at 114 Bishopthorpe Road, York (near the Winning Post pub). On the 1911 census he was at 1 Feversham Crescent, off Wigginton Road. The Sackett family has a website.

Walter Sackett may have been a minster at the Groves Chapel in York. My uncle Derek’s grandfather, John Rickaby Featherstone and family were very involved with this Chapel. John Rickaby was a lay preacher. His quarterly ticket of membership from 1910 looks like it was signed by ‘WS’.

This is a membership card for John Rickaby Featherstone’s son, Sidney (1904-1977). They lived at 54 Lord Mayor’s Walk, York a house which sadly has been demolished to make way for the York St John University.

Here is a photo of Sidney and his sister Vi outside the family home on the corner of De Grey Street.

This shows John Rickaby, wife Louisa (previously Thompson, née England), Sidney and Vi inside the house in the early 1910s.

Groves Chapel closed in 1973 and is now a branch of the Co-op.
