What links a York menswear shop and parkin?
I like looking at old York trade directories and official guides to the city. Great for old adverts. Chamber of Trade guides for 1933 and 1949 carry adverts for “Ye Olde Parkin Shoppe” at 27-28 High Petergate. This was run by the Misses Pearson. I’ve done a bit of digging – they were 3 unmarried sisters from Leeds. Myra (born 1881), Alice (1882) and Helen (1893) were confectioners, cake makers and shopkeepers. In 1911 they were pastry cooks at 391 Harehills Lane, Leeds (still in a row of shops today). 1913 Kelly’s Directory: 28 High Petergate was Miss Mary A Jewitt, confectioner. 1911 census: she employed 4 assistants/apprentices and had a domestic servant. The picture accompanying the adverts shows 4 urns. Amazingly the urns are still there! Clarkson’s menswear near St Michael Le Belfry.
